Athens and cycling: Worth a try

Athens is the capital of Greece, for many obvious and historical reasons. What has always characterised it is a strong traditional multidimensional element, which acts as a ‘time machine’ through the ages.

The city composes a reality structured with interconnected colours and features from many decades. It grants its traveller the possibility of fluidly switching between chronologies, by neighbourhoods.

What could be more magical and picturesque, for a person to explore the city of such a reality, on a bicycle! Although the traffic system of the city and the road education of Greeks does not fully favor free cycling, there are some neighborhoods and spots in the city where anyone, always responsibly and with the right equipment, can enjoy their rides!

Historical center

Monastiraki, the alleys of Plaka, the pedestrian street of Aeropagitou, Filopappou Hill, all these amazing places, in the heart of the city! From Thiseio to Kerameikos, a pedestrian street leads you methodically and safely. This route is for the most part safe, pedestrianized, without many hills and offers great views.

OAKA

A very safe route, circular and with no hills or obstacles. The area is fenced, with no dirt or potholes.

Syngrou Estate

The grove of the Syngrou estate is full of paths and circular routes, ideal for cycling, in a green space, one of the few left in the city.

Parnitha and Ymittos

These are excellent routes which are suitable for experienced and fit cyclists , due to the geomorphology of the forest.

Free bikes in Athens
